Dragon Ball 5 Anime Heroes Whod Be Gokus Sidekick (& 5 Heroes Hed Never Work With)

Goku from Dragon Ball doesn't have a sidekick, but which anime hero would fit the bill if he ever had one? Naruto? Luffy from One Piece? Let's see.

Goku is one of the most powerful people on the planet in Dragon Ball. He doesn’t often need help in battle, though he sometimes gets it from his friends like Piccolo and Vegeta, and his son Gohan. But with the right sidekick, a hero like Goku could probably be even more unstoppable by making use of the powers at their disposal.

Anime has a lot of really impressive heroes who might be the right fit to fight alongside Goku as his sidekick. But there are also probably some heroes that Goku wouldn’t work with because of their attitudes and philosophies, or because they just aren’t strong enough. Here are five anime heroes that could be Goku’s sidekick and five that he wouldn’t work with.

10 Sidekick: Alphonse Elric

Alphonse Elric is not the prodigy alchemist in Fullmetal Alchemist, but he is talented in his own right. He’s been training for a long time, and he’s adept at using alchemy both in battle and out. Plus, he’s cheerful and idealistic by nature, despite his soul being attached to a suit of armor. This would definitely make him a good fight to fight alongside Goku.

9 Never Work With: Edward Elric

On the other hand, Alphonse’s brother Edward would not be a good fit as Goku’s sidekick. Edward is pretty jaded, feeling like every adult that he’s ever dealt with has let him down in some way, and he definitely feels like he should be on his own. This alone would make it hard for him to work well as a sidekick to Goku, who tends to be a mentor even when he’s not trying to be. Plus, Edward’s cynicism would probably run the always cheerful Goku the wrong way.

8 Sidekick: Saitama

Saitama is pretty much the most powerful person in One Punch Man, though no one is really willing to give him the credit for it (if they’ve even noticed it at all). But he’s not really interested in fame or recognition and has sometimes actively let others take credit for his work because it meant more to them than him.

This lack of ego, plus his power, would make him a great companion for Goku. And since he’s so powerful, Saitama would give Goku a rival against whom to compete to become even stronger.

7 Never Work With: Guts

Guts from Berserk has had a pretty rough life, and he’s lived with violence essentially from the moment he was born. He’s on a revenge mission in the series, which would likely not quite rub Goku the right way. Goku has forgiven pretty much everyone he’s ever encountered for whatever they’ve done, which includes literally killing him at more than one time. Despite both being powerful and great in battle, the distinct personalities and different philosophies about fighting would not make them a good pair.

6 Sidekick: Ichigo Kurosaki

Ichigo Kurosaki spends all of Bleach working to become an even stronger and more powerful Shinigami. He’s determined to protect his friends and his family, and he works very hard to tap into all of the power reserves he has access to. Goku would likely really admire this, since he’s also working all the time to become even stronger.

The power differences between them are probably vast, with Goku being much stronger, but this would likely just motivate Ichigo to work even harder.

5 Never Work With: Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy is a great hero in One Piece. But his goals are too different from Goku’s, and they probably wouldn’t be able to work together for very long before Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew took off for a new adventure.

Plus, Luffy is hard to pin down and not terribly interested in strategizing during battles. This would make it very difficult for Goku, who’s used to having a partner like Vegeta, who works with him to combine their powers, to come up with a battle plan.

4 Sidekick: Naruto Uzumaki

Naruto, like Goku, has spent his entire life training to become the best at what he does. He’s considered the strongest ninja in Konoha, which makes sense since he’s the Hokage and therefore their leader.

Naruto and Goku would get along well because they’re both highly motivated by the desire to protect their friends, and they’ve worked incredibly hard to get to the power levels that they have. Plus, they’re both cheerful and optimistic and would likely make each other even stronger.

3 Never Work With: Levi

Levi from Attack on Titan has had a pretty hard time. While he’s a good strategist, he probably wouldn’t be able to keep up with Goku against stronger enemies, even though he’s used to fighting Titans. The problem is that he rarely wins against Titans, and it usually takes a whole group of people to bring one down. Goku would no doubt need someone stronger and more independent to join him in battle.

2 Sidekick: Kenshin Himura

Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin has a reputation in the series for being the greatest swordsman in Japan and also for not really being interested in using those skills.

He only brings out his sword when absolutely necessary, and he always tries to avoid killing people. His desire to live a peaceful life would likely touch Goku, who spends most of his time training, but who is also very devoted to protecting his Earth.

1 Would Never Work With: Alucard

Alucard from Hellsing is a literal vampire who hunts other vampires and monsters. He’s really good in a fight, but he also uses guns. It seems likely that Goku would reject the idea of a person using guns to win a battle since he works so hard to be able to fight with just his body. Their goals and battle styles are just too different for them to be able to work together.
