Even though Buu's Human Extinction Attack sounds pretty deadly, there are ways to survive it in the Dragon Ball universe.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball has become one of the biggest anime series of all time, and it’s practically synonymous with action-centric shonen series. For several decades Dragon Ball has been able to evolve its growing story of Goku’s journey to become the strongest and keep his planet and those he cares about safe from invading evil. Dragon Ball has no shortage of malevolent villains, but Buu is one of the most extreme examples and the final threat that Dragon Ball Z goes out on.

Dragon Ball’s heroes are incredibly powerful, but death is still a common occurrence in the anime series. Buu’s Human Extinction Attack is one of the deadliest maneuvers in Dragon Ball Z and it wipes out nearly Earth’s entire population, but it’s not a technique that’s completely impossible to survive.

10 Be Present On Kami’s Lookout

Buu’s Human Extinction Attack is able to lock onto all humanity on the planet and systematically eliminate them all. Super Buu is able to pull off such a massive coup because he’s positioned on Kami’s Lookout where he can accurately assess Earth’s population. Accordingly, Buu’s Human Extinction Attack is focused specifically on Earth, meaning that it’s released from Kami’s Lookout, not at Kami’s Lookout. This leaves those who are present at the sanctuary immune to the attack, and it leaves Kami’s Lookout as technically the safest place on Earth during the attack.

9 Already Be Deceased

This may come across as a case of semantics, but one crafty way to avoid Buu’s Human Extinction Attack is to already be dead when it’s being used. The Human Extinction Attack targets people who are alive, not already dead. Accordingly, Fortuneteller Baba or anyone who’s present in Other World at the time are not subjected to Buu’s genocide. It also stands to reason that if any deceased individuals happen to be on Earth for whatever reason that they’d also be passed over by the attack or simply not affected by it.

8 Break Through To The Goodness That’s Inside Buu

A common trope in Dragon Ball is that major villains experience multiple transformations until they reach their final form. Many different versions of Buu get revealed, one of which is actually on the kinder side and really gets to bond with Hercule Satan and his dog, Bee.

One of the most fascinating details about Buu’s Human Extinction Attack is that Good Buu’s residual appreciation for Hercule is still felt by Super Buu on some level. The events of the Buu Saga separate much of Dragon Ball Z’s cast in major ways as they all attempt to figure out contrasting solutions to this serious problem. Gohan finds himself deep in training alongside Supreme Kai and Old Kai on the Sacred World of the Kais. Gohan’s departure during Buu’s attack leads many to believe that he’s also passed away, but in fact, he’s protected by his status on another planet. It’s not that the Sacred World of the Kais is specifically immune to the Human Extinction Attack, but any outside planet will provide the necessary protection.

There are plenty of exaggerated enemy attacks in Dragon Ball that sometimes seem impossible to avoid. Buu’s Human Extinction Attack comes across as such a technique that’s too strong to survive and has the ability to lock onto the entire population.

It’s important to realize that both Tien and Chiaotzu are able to avoid Buu’s blasts and survive the onslaught. Goku is later able to block the attack when Fused Zamasu pulls off a similar attack in the manga. This shows that enough power and speed can be enough here.

This may not technically be the safest way to survive against Buu’s Human Extinction Attack, but it’s technically appropriate and actually what’s done to save most of the Earth’s population. The Dragon Balls remain incredibly powerful relics that don’t have unlimited power, but they’re able to bring fallen individuals back to life under the right circumstances. The Dragon Balls are used to reverse the damage of Buu’s Human Extinction Attack and restore the Earth’s population. This solution cannot be routinely used, but it still shows that actions can be taken afterward to turn this loss into a victory.

3 Have Whis Perform A Temporal Do-Over

Dragon Ball Super introduces Gods of Destruction and Angels, supremely powerful celestial beings who could destroy or revive an entire planet on a whim. Angels are forbidden from interfering with the events of the universe, but Whis oversteps his boundaries in a rare circumstance where Golden Frieza successfully destroys the Earth. Whis executes a Temporal Do-Over, which allows him to briefly rewind time. The same principle could be applied after Buu’s Human Extinction Attack, which would ideally give Goku and company enough time to prevent Buu from pulling it off.

A technique that has as intimidating of a name as Buu’s Human Extinction Attack may seem pointless to try to outrun, but it’s not completely impervious to resistance. Certain individuals prove that this maneuver can be dodged or blocked against with the proper defense. This means that techniques that specifically facilitate accelerated transportation, like the teleportation-like Instant Transmission, are able to avoid the Human Extinction Attack. Anyone who knows Instant Transmission just needs to lock onto someone else’s energy and move before the attack makes contact. Of course, locking onto another survivor may be difficult, but it’s not impossible.

1 Exist In A Separate Universe Or Timeline

Dragon Ball begins as a somewhat grounded series that progressively broadens its scope to include new planets, universes, and even timelines. Buu is one of the biggest threats that Earth has ever faced and his Human Extinction Attack thoroughly rocks the planet to its core. However, it’s an ability that’s restricted to a sole planet. Therefore, anyone who escapes to a different universe or even uses a time machine to enter an alternate timeline will be immune to Buu’s attack. The Null Realm that’s used for the Tournament of Power would also be a safe place to find refuge.
