Dragon Ball 10 Things About ChiChi That Make No Sense

Dragon Ball's Chi-Chi has had to put up with a lot just being the wife of Goku. But there are aspects of her that don't hold up to close scrutiny.

Daughter of the Ox-King and Warrior Princess of Fire Mountain, Chi-Chi is the dotting mother of prodigies Gohan and Goten as well as the wife of infamous Son Goku. Once a skilled martial artist, now devoted mother of two, she sure has been through a lot in life.

From her coping with the multiple deaths and near-deaths of her immediate family, to how she fell in love with her dimwitted husband, Chi-Chi has many factors that are a bit mind-blogging. Why would a princess go along with marrying such an absentminded man and put up with his careless lack of fathering, among other things?

10 Greedy With Money Even Though She Has A Dowry

Ever since they were newlyweds, Chi-Chi always pressured Goku to go farm in the fields or take on day jobs, even though that's what he hated most. However, being that Chi-Chi is the daughter of the Ox-King and princess of a kingdom, she must have a dowry somewhere. At least, there must have been a substantial one soon after their marriage.

Since then, however, it appears that the Ox-King has lost his fortune and now lives a modest life. One wonders where all the money had gone. Perhaps the princess hid it away all this time, making her lazy (aside from training) husband work to put food on the table.

9 Yamcha Confesses His Love

Much like Goku, Yamcha also met Chi-Chi when they were children. Also like Goku, their first meeting involved them fighting. Young Chi-Chi just finished decapitating a dinosaur when she runs into Yamcha, a stranger to her. Since she was afraid of strangers, she fires a blast at him. In defense, the lone fighter knocks her unconscious. At the time, he had no idea she was the Ox King's daughter and upon realizing, apologizes profusely and confesses his love for her.

However, by the time the 23rd Martial Arts Tournament takes place, she forgets all about Yamcha as she is in love with Goku. She sees Yamcha at the tournament and apologizes to him for not returning his love. If Goku was never in the picture, perhaps Yamcha and Chi-Chi would have been the ones to be married and that would have thrown the entire series and its proceedings for a loop.

8 Heavy Arsenal At Home

While being an overprotective, stern mother, Chi-Chi is also a skilled martial artist. However, she hasn't used such skills for quite some time after giving birth and taking care of a home. Given her maternal nature and being of pure heart, it is surprising that on more than one occasion, she is seen wielding multiple firearms, which came from within her own home.

This seems out of character especially because she has, at times, two small children who live with her and having such an arsenal in the home would be a hazard. Being that her family is comprised of multiple Super Saiyans, I guess they would come out unscathed from a gunshot wound or grenade explosion.

7 Can't Fly

Within the Dragon Ball universe, there are many characters who can achieve flight. Some are aliens, some are hybrids and some are even earthlings, one being Videl. However, Chi-Chi, who is also a human, is unable to fly, regardless of her extensive martial artists' training.

Even more perplexing is that later on in the series, as an adult, she can create a red aura around her as well, possibly the kaio-ken technique, which is a concentration of her ki. So, she could have used this control to fly. In the end, it was a good thing that she was pure of heart as a child and could fly along with Goku on his flying nimbus, or perhaps their romance might not have come to such fruition.

6 What's A Super Saiyan?

Being the conservative mom that Chi-Chi is, when Gohan was finally able to turn Super Saiyan after training with his father intensively, she was more than surprised by his appearance. From being her darling, handsome normal little boy, now a 'delinquent' as she so put it. This was due to his blonde/platinum hair and eyebrows, styled in a spiky, alternative fashion and his eye color had even changed.

All of this was too much for the sheltered mother to bear and was very angry. However, it seems odd that she had no idea what Super Saiyan even was, considering her royal upbringing. The way that she speaks about Saiyan's and how he doesn't approve of their fighting style and all shows that she has some idea of the lineage but perhaps she forgot what she was taught since she simply didn't care.

5 Never Been Kissed But Still Got Pregnant Twice

To many fans of the series, it becomes apparent that neither Chi-Chi nor Goku have ever kissed or shown any public displays of affection at all, yet they have two children together. From the start of their relationship, both of them seem like a naïve, traditional couple. They go through courting rituals, a promise of marriage at a young age after not even knowing each other, and making a family.

Chi-Chi is a stay at home mom, helping Gohan with his studies, while Goku goes off training or battling to save the Earth for years at a time. Goku also shows how immature and prudish he is on many occasions when he sees others showing affection to their love interests or spouses. Yet Chi-Chi bears a child not once, but twice with a man who is so childish.

4 Chose To Marry A Commoner

For most royalty, the princesses' marriage is arranged. However, in Chi-Chi's case, she decided on her own to marry a "commoner." And one wonders how her Father, the Ox-King took the news. Not only was Goku not royalty, but he was a dimwit at best and wouldn't seem like someone reliable enough to hold a marriage.

Also, what if, at any point, the Ox-King were to pass away. Then the kingdom would now be Queen Chi-Chi and King Goku's, and that seems like something that the Saiyan would not have been able to handle by any means.

3 Loses The Will To Fight

In the beginning, Chi-Chi grew up happily has a warrior Princess along with her father, Ox-King. Sadly, her mother died shortly after giving birth to her. She undergoes rigorous training, becomes a skilled warrior, and enters into the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament.

Chi-Chi shows much promise in her battle with Goku, however, she has not trained ever since. Getting married and starting a family became her reason to be and she lost her will to fight. She does still remember what she was taught and teaches her son Goten martial arts, however.

2 Goku Mistreated Her

Although when they first met, Goku basically kicked her in a certain place just to see what sex she was, Chi-Chi was still interested in him just for giving her attention. It seemed to her that since he wanted to touch her, that meant that he was interested in her so she took it as a compliment, oddly enough, and agreed to be his bride when they were older.

When they met again during the Martial Arts Tournament, Goku didn't even recognize her even though Chi-Chi thought of him often. This fueled their battle but when Goku won, he asked her to marry him. However, being the man child he is, he thinks marriage is some sort of food and doesn't really know what he's getting into. Even after all of this nonsense, Chi-Chi still loved him and wanted to be with him.

1 Deals With Death Often

With her husband dying multiple times, it's a good thing that they live in a fictional universe where one can be resurrected by the Dragon Balls. Being the wife and mother to powerful Saiyan warriors of Earth is tough enough for Chi-Chi, but with the job comes much responsibility.

Goku, to date, has died a total of two times— but it can be speculated as more if you count different timelines/universes— and through each of these, Chi-Chi has taken it surprisingly well and continues to do her best to raise her children. She even trains Goten in martial arts while Goku was off being dead.
